Meet Gina

Internal Auditor; Children’s Charity Fundraiser

Member of USG Team Since 2006

I wanted to work for a company with a strong reputation in the marketplace. USG has been in business for more than a century and has the best-known brands in the industry. That made my decision to join the company very easy.

I gained a lot of experience on the job very quickly. Today I’m involved in all of the plant’s accounting activities including compiling and reporting monthly financial performance, production planning, payroll and taxes.

I really didn’t know what to expect when I first joined USG. I have since learned that the company is very committed to employees and offers many growth opportunities. In my first year, I attended training courses on leadership, safety and other topics. Everyone throughout the company is always more than willing to answer questions, teach me new skills and help me be more successful. I feel that I’m learning something new every day at USG.

I am highly motivated to learn and excel in my career. To broaden my finance and manufacturing knowledge, my manager encouraged me to work three months at one of USG’s largest plants last summer. The experience also made me more marketable within USG, and will enable me to apply for a wider range of positions should I want to move around the company.

My co-workers are very genuine, “hometown” people. They remind me of the friendly, caring people in the small Midwestern town where I grew up. I didn’t know anyone when I moved to Iowa, and everyone at the plant went out of their way to make me feel welcome. They truly opened their hearts and community to me. I recently bought a house and my co-workers even offered to help me move in. My co-workers make coming to work very enjoyable.

My parents emigrated from Mexico and I’m proud to be the first in my family to graduate from high school and college. One of the things that helped me be successful was the Junior Achievement program, which gave me a good understanding of the business world and inspired me to set high goals for myself. To give other kids the same opportunity, I organize a Junior Achievement bowl-a-thon at the plant to raise money each year. I really go out of my way to try and get everyone at the plant involved for a night of fun for a good cause. I think it’s very important for children to understand how the business world works and learn the value of a dollar. I have been fortunate in life and I enjoy helping others where I can.
