EPA SmartWay Partnership

Our environmental stewardship expands beyond our manufacturing practices and property lines. We are committed to transporting our products as sustainably as we can. We are a member of The Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay(SM) Transport Partnership program, which identifies products and services that reduce transportation related emissions as part of a broader effort to improve air quality and reduce fuel consumption. For more than half of our shipping needs, we use other SmartWay Transport Carriers, who like us take steps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

We joined SmartWay to better understand our environmental performance and energy use, set improvement goals, and take measurable, concrete actions to reduce the impact of transportation on the environment and USG. As a result of our efforts, the EPA awarded us with the 2009 SmartWay Excellence Award, which recognizes companies and organizations for outstanding contributions to greater fuel efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and improved air quality. To ensure future improvements in fuel efficiency, we require our carriers to become SmartWay providers within one year of contracting with USG.

One of the leading organizations for transportation and logistics professionals, the National Shippers Strategic Transportation Council (NASSTRAC), also honored our efforts with their annual Shipper of the Year Award for best practices in transportation and logistics. The award showcases the most innovative programs that support the business goals of companies through smart transportation.

We use a combination of truck, rail, sea and intermodal transport to ship product and materials. For trucking, we use advanced logistics technology to ensure optimum materials loading before transport and we’ve adopted no-idling policies for trucks at shipping docks.
