We asked 200 finishers what their preferred color of USG joint compound was and why. From green to blue, and purple to lime green, the responses were as unique as the work they undertake each and every day.

35% of respondents identified themselves as Blue Lid because it features less shrinkage.

USG Sheetrock® Brand Plus 3® Joint Compound
Up to 25% less weight than conventional-weight compounds, this compound features good open time and less shrinkage. Requiring one fewer coat over fasteners and bead, it eliminates the need for taping and topping compounds. It also sands with the ease of a topping compound and bonds like a taping compound.

USG Sheetrock® Brand Dust Control Joint Compound
This unique formula binds up fine residue during sanding to form heavier particles that tend to fall to the floor instead of clouding the air. Each job goes more quickly and cleans up faster with less nuisance from airborne sanding dust. This lightweight compound also requires only two coats over bead and fasteners. It bonds like a taping product for a tough, tight bond under most job conditions and combines all-purpose, single-package convenience with optimum taping and topping performance.

33% of respondents identified themselves as Green Lid and cited a smooth finish as one of the main reasons why.

USG Sheetrock® Brand All Purpose Joint Compound
Combining single-package convenience with good taping and finishing performance, this compound is recommended for laminating and repairing cracks in interior plaster and masonry not subject to moisture. It also features great open time and cold bond, and has smooth and slick properties.

14% of our respondents identified themselves as Purple Lid because it’s perfect for all coats.

USG Sheetrock® Brand Midweight™ Joint Compound
This ready-mixed, high-performance compound provides superior working qualities and good open time. Compared to conventional-weight compounds, it weighs up to 15% less, has easier working and sanding properties, and provides lower shrinkage for metal bead, trim and fastener concealments. The special vinyl formulation makes it ideal for embedding tape and for filling, leveling and finishing over gypsum panel joints. It’s excellent for skim-coating and hand-applying simple textures.

9% of respondents identified themselves as Lime Green lid because it sands so easily.

USG Sheetrock® Brand UltraLightweight Joint Compound
Up to 40% less weight than conventional-weight compounds, this ultralightweight compound is great for over head mechanical tools.

Blue, purple, green or lime green, everyone has their preferred lid color of USG joint compound. But one thing we can all agree on, is that settling for “good enough” is never an option. You need reliable, high-quality products that you can depend on every time. And with USG, you’re always getting the best possible quality.
