In addition to a fully enclosed central mall, the Broadway Plaza megastructure in Los Angeles contains four principal elements including a 32-story office structure, a 500 room hotel, a 250,000-square-foot department store and an eight-level car parking facility. The diversity of these environments and their functions offered up a variety of unique design problems and solutions.
Of the various drywall systems used in the project, the one of greatest importance was the USG® Cavity Shaft Wall, which provides significant performance and cost-saving benefits. Combined with the new box-T-stud [cavity] system, this drywall provided significant and cost-saving benefits in addition to offering aesthetically interesting details like curved walls, dropped ceilings, abnormally tall partitions and ceiling coffers.
The success of the cavity system in the office tower prompted its use in the elevator, duct and pipe shafts of the hotel.
