Transforming Our Footprint at USG

At USG, sustainability continues to be a priority and one of the main drivers behind the goals we set as an organization as it relates to corporate responsibility and accountability. We honor our heritage of investment in innovation through our commitment to developing products and processes that conserve resources for future generations.

This year represents the start of a new era for USG with the announcement of our 2030 Sustainability Goals. USG has established sustainability goals in four key areas, which include the goal of Transforming our Footprint. This commitment enables our customers to design more sustainable spaces for their communities.

With USG’s commitment to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) in late 2021, we aim to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in order to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C. USG set aggressive, yet achievable goals for reducing carbon emissions which strengthen our position as a sustainability leader.

Reduce Manufacturing GHG Emissions (Scope 1 & 2) by 30%

USG will implement an ambitious internal energy efficiency program to reduce the emissions at our manufacturing plants and increase the overall use of renewable energy. USG is driven to achieve this goal knowing the harm that greenhouse gas emissions have on the environment, and we are committed to converting all electricity use to verified renewable electricity sources, such as solar or wind, by 2030.

Reduce Non-Manufacturing GHG Emissions (Scope 3) by 15%

USG will implement a program to reduce GHG emissions from raw materials and product transportation. We will selectively purchase raw materials with lower embodied carbon and utilize more environmentally friendly transportation methods.

The USG Solution

After signing on to SBTi in November of 2021, USG finalized our commitment and verified our targets in early 2023. We have developed a carbon emissions reduction plan that considers product reformulation, manufacturing upgrades for energy efficiency, the use of on-site renewable energy, and procurement of renewable energy. With 2030 quickly approaching, USG has already made progress toward transforming our footprint.

The USG manufacturing plant in Cloquet, MN has purchased 100% renewable electricity which will reduce the embodied carbon of products made at this plant and contribute towards our goal of reduced Scope 2 emissions. Updating the lighting at our manufacturing has continued since the early 2000s.

Additionally, our Wisconsin plants in Delavan and Walworth have utilized smart lighting to optimize their energy usage, and our Denver, Phoenix, and Port Reading plants have switched from propane-powered forklifts to EVs.
