USG Celebrates Two Inspiring Leaders

We are proud to recognize two outstanding women whose leadership and dedication continue to shape USG and the manufacturing industry.

Detroit Plant Manager Exemplifies the Value of Safety

When Sarah Messa was promoted to Detroit plant manager, she stepped into a situation that required a process overhaul, predominantly regarding safety. By revamping the entire safety program and instituting protocols that changed how the plant approached safety, Sarah helped transform USG Detroit into a top performer, achieving zero recordable injuries in 2024 while simultaneously driving an 11% increase in Durock® Brand Cement Board production.

Each year, the Manufacturing Institute honors a select group of women in science, technology, engineering, and production who make a positive impact on their companies and communities. Sarah’s commitment to safety, operational excellence, and mentorship earned her a spot among the Manufacturing Institute’s 2025 Women MAKE Awards honorees, a distinction given to only 100 women nationwide.

Ceilings VP Recognized as Advocate for Women in Manufacturing

Ann Franzen, USG Vice-President of Manufacturing, has been inducted into the Women in Manufacturing Hall of Fame for her trailblazing career and advocacy for women in the industry. The Hall of Fame recognizes women who have made outstanding contributions to the industry and their workplaces, and who have inspired, mentored, and supported other women along the way.

As USG’s first female plant manager and first female Manufacturing VP in our ceilings division, Ann has championed inclusion, mentorship, and leadership development for more than a decade. She was a founding member of the Women in Manufacturing (WiM) employee resource group, which connects female manufacturing employees across the organization and promotes career advancement, and spearheaded the WiM summit to provide leadership training opportunities to women.

Congratulations to Sarah and Ann for these well-deserved honors—your leadership, vision, and passion are an inspiration to us all!
