Richard C. (Rik) Master is a Research Architect with more than 40 years experience in the science of buildings and is currently Sr. Manager, Sustainability for USG. During his time at USG, Rik has spent 16 years in Corporate Sustainability and Building Science in addition to 17 years at USG's Corporate Innovation Center in Libertyville, Illinois, where he worked on the development of several building systems. He is also the author of USG ACTION an integrated technical information retrieval software package that helps architects design and specify projects and has now evolved into USG's current technical website www.usgdesignstudio.com.
Rik is an active member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 2008 AIA Chicago appointed him President of the Board of Directors and he became the first representative of a manufacturing company to hold the title. Next year, in 2016, Rik will take over as President of AIA Illinois. In addition to AIA, Rik is involved in a number of industry organizations, including the Construction Specifications Institute, U.S. Green Building Council, Building Envelope Council, Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings, the Health Product Declaration Collaborative and Chicago’s Sustainability Leadership Forum. He is a Licensed Architect in the state of Illinois, a LEED Accredited Professional and FEMA Disaster Technical Assistant.
Prior to joining USG, Rik was a principle at an Architectural/Construction firm specializing in Energy Efficient Design and High-Performance Buildings. He even designed and built a "Passive Design" home in 1979, where he currently resides and is 70% off-the-grid.
