Corporate responsibility

USG has a long-standing commitment to giving back to communities in which we do business, as well as to promoting global conservation.  Our corporate responsibility initiatives extend to programs that support communities in need and that safeguard the environment in which we live.  By encouraging social and environmental awareness in all of our practices and core values, we are helping to revitalize communities and protect and preserve human health and natural resources.

Health & safety

Since its founding in 1902, USG has made employee safety a core value by developing and adhering to safety guidelines that exceed industry standards and regulations.  In recent surveys of our plants, employees consistently list safety as one of the top reasons they liked working at USG.  Even in a company with 13,000 employees, our safety record is nine times better than the average for all U.S. durable goods manufacturing.  In 1999, a record 25 USG plants exceeded 1,000,000 safe hours, and 39 plants worked 1,000 days without a lost workday.  In the 75-year history of the safety sentinel program, USG has been awarded the MSHA's "Sentinels of Safety" award 15 times-more than any other company.  This "safety first" culture is what keeps our plants more productive - and it's why our employees go home after every shift to see their families.

Community involvement

With a solid foundation, there is no limit to what can be built. The USG Foundation is committed to social responsibility and supports local and national charitable organizations that serve and educate the communities in which USG operates.  The USG Foundation originated in 1979 to enrich the lives of our families, friends, colleagues, customers and citizens where we live and work. It provides financial assistance to non-profit organizations with solutions in mind for social, health and educational issues. Since 1979, The USG Foundation has donated more than $18 million to various charitable organizations, including the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, Chicago Cares and many others.
