A Century of Canadian Strength and Innovation

As CGC Inc. prepares to reopen the Little Narrows gypsum quarry mine in Nova Scotia, we're reminded of the company's evolution since this facility was founded in 1907. At the time, CGC (then known as Canadian Gypsum Co.) primarily focused on quarrying and exporting gypsum rock to the United States. Now, over 100 years later, the mine will again be in use, but CGC's industry role is no longer limited to extraction and exports.

Instead, CGC has evolved into a leading manufacturer and distributor of gypsum wallboard, suspended acoustical ceilings and interior finishing materials, with nine locations nationwide. A trusted name in the Canadian construction industry, CGC products such as Sheetrock® Brand drywall have become the top choice for builders, construction companies and major retailers across the country.

A Legacy of Excellence

With CGC's head office operating out of Oakville, ON, we now employ over 830 Canadians and operate with the same goal as when we started: focusing on innovation and reliability.

CGC's forward-thinking approach to solving the industry's biggest challenges has shaped the company throughout decades. From the invention of modern drywall in 1917 with our Sheetrock® Gypsum Panels to the launch of specialized Mold Tough® UltraLight panels in the 2000s and our most recent UltraLight PRO Panels in early 2025, CGC has consistently innovated to provide the most groundbreaking products to help customers build better structures and a better world. In 2019, CGC and its parent company, USG, joined the Knauf group, the world's largest gypsum manufacturer. This enabled CGC to leverage even greater resources to meet customers' needs and streamline our business.

Investments in Canadian Manufacturing

To continue supporting Canadian customers better, CGC has focused our efforts on streamlining the supply chain – enhancing accessibility, reliability and sustainability of building material supply. These developments span the country from coast to coast, cementing CGC's commitment to serving our customers with dependable access to high-quality materials. Reopening our Little Narrows quarry is an essential step toward meeting rising material demand driven by the increase in Canadian residential housing builds. The quarry, which CGC most recently operated from 1954-2016, is projected to produce a substantial volume of raw gypsum.

Looking to Western Canada, we're maintaining the same momentum. In 2024, CGC established a new manufacturing facility in Wheatland County, Alberta, designed to be our most sustainable facility yet. Our Wheatland plant will produce and distribute CGC's Sheetrock® Brand wallboard, providing better access to industry-leading products in Western Canada.

Our investment in these facilities aligns with CGC's commitment to innovation, job creation, and meeting the increasing demand for high-quality building materials to serve our valued Canadian customers better, helping them build faster, smarter, and more sustainably.

Supporting Local Communities

With strategically located manufacturing plants and distribution centers across Canada, CGC is dedicated to producing high-quality products while supporting local economies. Our investment of $104 million to re-launch the Little Narrows, NS quarry and $210 million to open a new plant in Wheatland County, AB, reflects this dedication – creating over 200 full-time manufacturing jobs across both locations.

Beyond job creation, we actively support local communities through CGC's 'Give Local' initiative in donating to charitable organizations, sponsorships, and participating in community events, reinforcing our commitment to making a meaningful impact where we live and work.

Just as we’re committed to supporting the communities where we operate, we’re equally focused on building a more inclusive future in manufacturing. This commitment is reflected in initiatives such as our first-ever Women ROCK! Day at the Little Narrows quarry in 2024 – a community engagement event that welcomed female students from local high schools to explore the manufacturing industry through hands-on experience and direct interaction with our team. We continue to celebrate and support the women shaping our industry through our annual Women in Manufacturing Dinner. This event recognizes the incredible contributions of women at CGC and across the sector, creating a space for connection, inspiration, and shared progress. By creating opportunities for women to explore and thrive in the skilled trades, we’re helping to build a more diverse, dynamic, and forward-looking manufacturing workforce.

Looking to the Future

As we continue to grow, our focus remains on delivering high-performance, sustainable, and innovative building solutions for Canadians. Whether working on a large-scale commercial project or a residential renovation, CGC supports Canadians with industry-leading products and expertise. We continue to deliver high-quality products that solve real-world challenges throughout these developments. CGC's commitment to building solutions for Canadian customers and communities remains the company's core.

Through cutting-edge developments, market expansion and constant evolution, CGC continues to grow—through the roots it put down in Canada over 100 years ago.
